Red Oolitic Jasper Cabochon
This is a Red Oolitic Jasper Triangular Cabochon that I recently cut and polished for sale.
Oolitic Jasper was formed when iron rich sand grains reacted with oxygen in the atmosphere. The reaction oxidized the sand grains turning them red. These sand grains eventually settled on the sea floor where they were compressed and cemented by silica into the Jasper stone we see today.
Oolitic Jasper can be singled out from other jasper's due to the visible individual grains of sand you can still see in the stone.
Minnesota Oolitic Jasper is estimated to be over 1.8 billion years old.
I found the original rough stone while rockhunting on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
The dimensions are 1.45"x 1.33"x .23"-.15" The weight is 10 grams.
