Orange Porphyry Cabochon
This is a Orange Porphyry Cabochon that I recently cut and polished. Porphyry is an igneous rock formed form cooled magma. Compositional differences cause portions of the magma to cool at slower rates which creates the angular feldspar crystals found in porphyry. This type of porphyry gets its orange color from iron staining which is common in northern Minnesota. I found the original stone while rock hounding near Duluth Minnesota. The dimensions are 2.3"x 1.37"x .35", the weight is 1.20 oz.
