Montana Moss Agate Surface Polished

$33.00Price

This is a 3.03 oz Surface Polished Montana Moss Agate that I recently made for sale.

I started by cutting an end slab off the rough stone so there was a flat surface to work with. From there I sanded and rounded the edges preparing the surface to take a polish. After that I smoothed the surface and applied a final polish to the stone. The final product is a polished cut face with the rest of the stone being left natural to show contrast.

The main pattern is this agate is light fortification banding in the center with black moss around the edges.

Montana Moss Agates formed as a result of volcanic activity in the Yellowstone area. Silica rich groundwater running through the region deposited silica in voids of igneous rock and fallen trees. The reaction of manganese left over from volcanic activity and the silica rich solution from the ground water created the black and brown dendritic patterns found in Montana Agate. This process created the Montana Moss Agates that are found today. Over time the Yellowstone river carried the agates away from Yellowstone National Park and are now most commonly found on the banks of the river in eastern Montana.

The weight of the stone is 3.03 oz / 86 grams.

The rough dimensions are 1.87"x 1.55"x 1.45"
