Montana Moss Agate Face Polished
This is a Face Polished Montana Moss Agate that I recently made for sale.
The pattern in this agate is very unique. You can see orbicular banding patterns throughout the polished surface. There is black manganese moss patterns along with a well defined blue color making it a uncommon / rare pattern.
This stone is able to balance and stand on its own making it great as a display piece or desk ornament.
I started by cutting an end slab off the rough stone so there was a flat surface to work with. From there I sanded and rounded the edges preparing the surface to take a polish. After that I smoothed the surface and applied a final polish to the stone. The final product is a polished cut face with the rest of the stone being left natural to show contrast.
Montana Moss Agates formed as a result of volcanic activity in the Yellowstone area. Silica rich groundwater running through the region deposited silica in voids of igneous rock and fallen trees. The reaction of manganese left over from volcanic activity and the silica rich solution from the ground water created the black and brown dendritic patterns found in Montana Agate. This process created the Montana Moss Agates that are found today. Over time the Yellowstone river carried the agates away from Yellowstone National Park and are now most commonly found on the banks of the river in eastern Montana.
