Black Porphyry Keychain
This Keychain is made from a rock known as Porphyry. Porphyry is an Igneous rock formed from cooled magma. Feldspar crystals within the magma cool at a slower rate than the basalt around it. The result is unique angular crystal formations throughout the stone.
I self collected the original rough stone while rockhounding the Blue Earth River near Mankato Minnesota.
I made the keychain by cutting thin slabs on my saw then cutting the slab into a rough outline. I further shaped the stone and polished it on the flat lap machine. Once this was complete I drilled a eye hole with a dremel and attached a key ring.
The dimensions are 2"x 1.45"x .15" The weight is 19 grams.
